Coriakin's Composing Contest:

And the winner is.... Dr. Malthus, for Twilight's End!!!!!

Yeah, yeah, Coriakin the instrument whore here. If you can keep the jokes to yourself for a while, I've got an opportunity for you. You're a quester, and want an instrument, and I want more bards in CL. So here's the deal:

(This is the first in what I hope will be a series of contests, all of the same nature: the best song I receive for a particular instrument wins the part to make that instrument. The prizes will be different, but the idea will be the same. I hope)

The prize: Antlers (makes a starbuck harp)

The Contest: Write a song for starbuck harp, and send it to me. My email address is CoriakinCL@gmail.com. After an arbitrarily decided period of time, I will choose the best song I have received. The best song in my sole estimation wins its composer the antlers. All submissions I receive will be posted up here as I receive them, though the composer's name will not be listed. You can only enter *one* song into this contest, although your one song can be changed, up to the finishing date. So feel free to come here and check out the competition.

If it turns out that no-one submits until the last minute, so that no-one else can hear what they submit, I'll get rid of that part in future contests. I hope that people don't though, so y'all can inspire each other to greater and greater heights of composing.

Prize awarded: Friday, June 29th.

Other rules:
- Only one song will be considered for each person. Any more songs that are sent will replace your currently submitted one.
- Include tempo, a title, and your (character's) name when submitting. Duh.
- Only Bard Questers can enter this contest. If you're a bard or a quester hopeful, sorry, you're out of luck.
- It doesn't matter whether you have an instrument already, or how long you've been a quester (partly because I have no way of checking). The only thing that matters in this contest is the quality of your music.
- This song MUST be for starbuck harp. I can't give you the right instrument if I don't have the right part. Hopefully I'll run other contests for other instruments, if people want to submit and I can find parts.
- The song you contribute should be new, something composed specifically for this contest, not one that you've had around for a while. Of course, I have no way of knowing if the songs I receive are really new, so I'll give y'all the benefit of the doubt and hope that no-one takes advantage of my trust. If I find out that people are 'cheating,' I'll add more limitations so no-one can. Please don't make me do that. :/

Sorry if this isn't as polite as it could be. Constantly hearing jokes about being a greedy bastard is starting to get me down. Especially since they're more true than not. :/

Congrats, Tessa! Deciding between Twilight's End and Chasin' Achates was really hard. In the end, I chose this one, because it's more lyrical, and a bit more jazzy. Honestly, I don't know which one is better. But I like this one a little bit more. I think. Tessa does really well, even without using the new features. Simple chord progression (F min - E. - D. - C). A bunch of 6ths, 9ths, and major 7ths that provide just the right amount of dissonance. The only thing is that the ending could be a little bit better, maybe. I dunno. It's fine as it is. I'd be interested to see what you can do to this using dynamics, Tessa. Good work, and congratulations again!

Very nice. Tina uses a very simple chord progression (C - D min), but as I always say, Simplest is bestest. :) And it does sound very rain-like. However, despite being nice, there wasn't really much of a melody, as far as I could tell. It got kind of repetitive. This would make a GREAT duet, accompanying a flute. Tina obviously understands rhythm and song structure well, but she needs to work on differentiating the melody from the accompaniment more. I mean, even the most ferocious downpour gets old after a while. :) Great job, Tina, and thanks!

Not bad at all. Not a tango either, but who cares? ;) A couple times a chord in different octave from the rest of the phrase would appear, which is kinda peculiar and distracting. It's generally better to keep leaps (movement between non-adjacent notes) to a 6th or less, unless you leap an octave. Having chords leap more than about a 3rd is kinda sketchy, in my opinion. Shows a good sense of rhythm. All in all, a pretty good song. Just work on those out of place chords at bit, Wangah. :)

Pretty good. Woohoo using new features! :) The first bit is very pretty, and has a steady rhythm. However, repeated chords in the lowest harp octave aren't as distinct as I wish they were. Still nice, though. After the song started speeding up I kinda lost the sense of the rhythm. It kept changing too quickly for me to keep up. :/ Also, the bit at tempo 120 just before the last @180 bit at the end had pauses of (p)7 between the chords. 7 is *really* bad, rhythmically speaking. In fact, so are all odd numbers, except multiples of three. At least, I think they are. [shrug] Ends kinda abruptly. A nice song, Aneirin, but it could use a bit of fine-tuning, in my opinion. Keep at it!

Woo! This is a great song, that I'd keep around as an example of tempo changes used very well. The first bit uses a progression of 5 chords, which kinda confused me, Ścause my head was expecting a sixth. However, since Prae keeps the same, slightly irregular rhythms for each of his sections, it doesn't matter that much. Hmm... tempo 72 and tempo 96... 72/96 = 3/4. Well done. :) Since he uses this ratio when he switches from 4/4 to 3/4 time, the overall tempo remains the same, even though the rhythm changes. And yes, I *did* get out a metronome to confirm this. :) Great job, Praetorius!

Very nice. Uses A-A-B-A form. Very nice, rhythmically, all the way through. I like the way that the melody stays mostly the same, but every verse adds a bit more accompaniment. Some of the chords in the third verse almost seem a bit cluttered, but not enough to cause any serious annoyance. All in all, a very nice song, from a very new quester. Good job Sareth!
